Broken Air Conditioning

The summer months in British Columbia can get very hot. In fact, in some parts of the province, it can be downright sweltering. Which is why for many of us, having air conditioning in our vehicle is absolutely essential. But what if the air conditioning in your car isn’t working properly or breaks down completely? This can happen seemingly out of the blue one day. Or it might have broken some time ago, but because the temperatures have only started rising, you hadn’t noticed it until now. Your first option is to put up with it and wind down the windows instead. However, there are days when this simply doesn’t cut it. You’ll also face greater exposure to the fumes around you, something which will be particularly unpleasant if you’re stuck in traffic. Or you can diagnose and fix the problem. Air conditioning systems in vehicles are made up of a large number of parts and they each need to function properly in order for your air con to work. If one of these parts becomes worn or dirty, it will affect the entire performance of your A/C. Because of this, there are a whole raft of reasons why your air conditioning might not be working. In order to figure out what’s gone wrong, it’s best to analyze the symptoms. For example, is the air conditioning unit giving off a funny smell? If so, it might be that mould has developed in your air conditioning unit over the dark, damp winter months. If this is the case, it will need to be flushed out. Or is your air conditioning blowing hot air, rather than cool air? Then there might be a refrigerant leak or a broken compressor. Or is the air conditioning button failing to light at all? This could signal an electrical issue. These are just some of the reasons why your air conditioning might have broken. The fact of the matter is that air conditioning units are complex electrical systems. They are also governed by a number of laws that work to limit the environmental impact of A/C and ensure the safety of the general public. In light of this, we recommend that you always ask a qualified mechanic to diagnose and fix the fault.
